IAISS is implementing a UNDP-supported intervention in Torit and Magwi counties from 3 July to 31 December 2026, under the wider “Peacebuilding and Prevention of Violent Extremism in East Africa” programme. The activity focuses on enhanced community cohesion, community-based reintegration and community resilience, with KOICA support.
Communities in Eastern Equatoria are navigating economic pressure, social fragmentation, protection risks and the difficult reintegration of people affected by conflict. The project links livelihood recovery with social cohesion, psychosocial support, conflict-sensitive leadership and community-owned mechanisms for resolving tensions.
Assess and profile 2025 livelihood beneficiaries with sex, age and disability disaggregation and safeguards for sensitive information.
Establish and orient county livelihood committees before beneficiary assessment; use them for transparent identification and support supervision.
Prioritize viable existing MSE groups (30%), women's groups and associations (30%), cooperatives (20%) and individual or sole proprietors (20%).
Deliver business and value-chain skills, livelihood planning, and accountable start-up cash or kits to eligible beneficiaries.
Identify and support ex-combatants through competency assessment, safeguarding, referrals and individualized livelihood planning.
Strengthen peace committees, mediation capacity and linkages between community mechanisms and state institutions.
Integrate psychosocial wellbeing, dialogue and safe participation into livelihood and peacebuilding activities.
Use radio dialogue, media training and creative communication to promote accurate information and peaceful coexistence.
The project is designed to profile 100 people, train 70 participants in business skills, support 50 ex-combatants, provide productive support to 120 beneficiaries, strengthen 30 peace-committee members, train 40 leaders in mediation, and deliver two radio dialogues reaching an audience of 10,000 people.
